Introduction
The significance of including caregivers* in a service user’s mental health care has been recognized for a long time. Additionally, substantial knowledge have been established regarding caregivers’ experiences, life circumstances, and stress reactions as a result of caring for a person with a mental disorder. Despite this, the provision of support and involvement of caregivers in care and treatment seems to suffer from various constraints and, therefore, not implemented in routine mental healthcare
*Caregivers are family members, friends or whomever the service user considers their closest relative.

Program sub-projects:
The FSI forensic project: Family Support and Involvement in forensic mental health settings
Summary: This project addresses the goal of a strengthened support for and involvement of family members to service users. A range of interventions have been developed in general mental health settings, but few interventions have been developed or adapted to accommodate with the unique barriers associated forensic mental health settings (FMHS) and the particular challenges that these family members face (e.g. severe burdens of care and dual stigmatization).
The aim of the FSI forensic project is to adapt, test and evaluate targeted interventions aiming to provide support and facilitate involvement of family members in FMHS based on research-based knowledge. The project includes a range different methods, including systematic review, surveys and interviews. The project design is inspired by the new framework for developing and evaluating complex interventions from the Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health Research.
