John was appointed to Chair of Mental Health Nursing in 2015 at the School of Healthcare, University of Leeds. His research focuses on reducing coercion and restrictive practices, patient and professional safety in mental health services and developing effective and therapeutic mental healthcare. He has attracted a substantial portfolio of funding (> £8 million) from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) and other funders. He has a strong international reputation as both a leading Mental Health Nurse and researcher. He has published widely (>100 peer reviewed publications).

John is passionate about conducting high quality cost effect research within the health service, with extensive knowledge of the different research methodologies. The interventions developed, for example, good practice manuals have been cited as examples of good practice and influenced clinical practice in the UK and abroad. The training package for patients, service users and carers to promote research awareness and understanding has been cited by the MHRN and NICE as an exemplar of good practice.

John is currently a Non-executive Director at Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust. He is a Registered Nurse Teacher with the Nursing, Midwifery Council (NMC) and is active within Mental Health Nursing Academics (UK).

John is a member of the NIHR advanced fellowship panel. He has considerable experience at supervising students at under graduate and post graduate levels. John is currently supervising several PhD students. He would welcome enquiries from students wishing to study a higher degree in any of the above research themes.


Besides representing the international perspective into RFM activities such as journal clubs, education and seminars, John is currently involved in the WAPS-Project, CTS and several PhD projects as adjunct professor, supervisor and researcher.
